Tire Suggestions Empty Tire Suggestions

Post by SKCobalt 2010-03-03, 12:36

Well as some of you know (Josh), my tires are pretty well done. I'm going to be getting some tires this spring. I was looking at the BFG KDW2's as well as Continental Condisport 2's. There are some Nitto's that I was looking at too (I think they were NT555's). In some ways I'm leaning towards the KDW2's because they have a little better wear rating and I'll be driving the car more this summer than last year and better wear would be nice. I also will be autocrossing too so a stickier tire is important too. I know there is a balance here between grip and wear characteristics.

Just looking to find out if anyone has the KDW's and how they rode compared to the Pirelli's (were they loud, harsh etc).

I have read some stuff on css.net but just wondering if anyone driving local roads has any experience.

Thanks guys.

I would suggest getting the KDW's my buddy has them on his 2002 Golf GTI 337 he loves them. As for really comparing them to the Pirilli's I can't really help you. I just bought some Cooper Zeon ZPT's last week in a 225/45/17 (stock tire is a Pirelli P6 205/50) I have also heard good things about them, they are sitting here ready to go waiting for it to dry up a bit more.

What about the Direzza star specs. A lot of the autoxrs seem to like them. Probably what I'm getting when my tires are toast.

I have the KDW2s. Not louder or more harsh than the Pirellis at all. You know how when it rains and the Pirellis like to hydroplane? The KDWs are actually able to get rid of some water. THey offer tonnes better grip, and leave sexy ass tracks.

I love them.

Thanks for the help guys. I was thinking about the Dunlop's but I think they may be a little too soft and I won't get too much mileage out of them. I saw some Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions for a good price but I think they are just as soft or softer than the Dunlops. I think that I'll get some more mileage out of the KDW2's than the dunlops with almost the same amount of grip.

Ya I only put about 15k a year on my car so mileage isn't a huge issue for me.

I had they BFG KDW II's on my car for a while, and wow what a night and day difference over the crappy pirelli's! The BFG's were barely, and i mean barely a pinch louder for roadnoise, but wet and dry drip was way up from the pirelli's. Also, ride quality was better, but i upped my sidewall to fill the fender (and help ride quality) as well.

Not to mention the awesome tracks anywhere you leave tracks! Tire Suggestions IMG_2404

What tire size did you end up with Josh? I was looking to get either a 225 40R18 or a 235 40R18. I will be on Pedders soon enough so I don't think I need to make the sidewall bigger as the car will drop a little bit.

Are the 235's on stock wheels. Just wondering if that is too wide for a stock wheel. I'm pretty well set on getting the KDW's now so now I need to find a good place to get them. I've called a couple places and It looks like somwhere between 250 and 280 per tire plus mounting and balancing.

I shouldn't have a problem with pedders and stock wheels then either. Not too much different in ride height.

I was talking to a guy selling oz alleggerita's with bfg kdw 2's for a pretty decent price. I'm not too sure about the rims. They look really nice but I was leaning towards the ultraleggera's before. The alleggerita's are a graphite colour which is really nice looking. Any thoughts? My car is laser blue metallic.

I don't want to be rude by asking, but how much did you guys pay for your KDW2's? from what I have been quoted, they are close to $1500 mounted and balanced.

They aren't the "best" tire, just really good and really sexy. I got my KDW2s from Tire Trends. Got them mounted and ballanced at Kal Tire. I paid whatever those places quote.

I'm still on the fence about new tires.

I was going to get a set of T1R's... but the highway will just kill them. Until the Cav is out of the shop, I'd might as well just just get a set of cheapos....
