Aren't you the trucker dude?
Radar detectors are illegal in commercially registered vehicles...

Anyways, go on Ebay, you can find new in packaging ones for way cheaper than most stores, I think I picked up my Cobra 9830 for about $200 new off Ebay, I'm sure you could find one of those for around $150 now.

If your going to be primarily on the highway, look into either the Bel STI (Escort Redline), or the Valentine 1. They are long range detectors, so they can pick up a signal from miles away.

If your looking for a city detector, probably get one with the GPS 'false alert' / traffic cam function.

The Passpoer 9500ix should be similar to the above long range... plus it has smart GPS false protection and stuff.. a little pricey...

The STI / Redline has a different pickup head that gives it superior range on the highway... but makes it really shitty in the city due to the crazy false alerts.
Escort has a small write up explaining it in better detail.

The redline was just released, so it'll be pricey until mid-summer.

I should also add, that the RL and STI are both stealth RD's (undetectable by an RDD). You can use them in provinces like Manitoba, and they can't pick them up with the RDD's.... just don't advertise it on your dash if they do end up pull you over.

And with that said... there is a nice trick to hiding your RD if you are in one of the provinces that they are illegal in. It involves using the postal privacy laws to your advantage.

You don't really have to Google it.... Smile
The guys on SR did some digging back in the day, and with the aid of a few law students, we found the ultimate loop hole.

Basically, get a family member to mail you a packing envelope big enough for your RD to fit in , and leave it unsealed. ie; tape the packing envelope shut, but don't stick it shut with the adhesive. Keep this postmarked package in your car.
If you are ever in a province or state where RD's are illegal, and you happen to get pulled over under suspicion of possession of an RD, you can simply throw the unit in the package and seal it up. They can in no way make you open that package with out a warrant (and what judge would grant a warrant for searching for an RD?).

The key thing, though, is to make sure it is postmarked. Apparently they can make you open a package that hasn't been mailed yet, because it isn't covered under the privacy laws until has been mailed.
